Do you need an electrical insurance inspection for your home?

In some cases, your insurance company may require you to have an electrical insurance inspection completed before they will grant a policy for your home. This is due to changes in electrical standards and an increase in fires caused by electrical problems over the past few years. If your insurance company asks you to have an inspection completed on your home and you fail to do so, you can expect to pay 3-5 times more for insurance.

Who can perform a residential electrical insurance inspection?

In order for an electrician to perform an insurance inspection on your home, they must be bonded and have at least $3-5 million insurance with WCB. Any old electrical systems with knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring will also need to be updated by a licensed company that meets these requirements to ensure that your house will be eligible for insurance. Make sure to speak to a professional electrician before having any work completed to ensure that the work will be finished properly the first time around.
